The Pioneer PE-16M is not as famous as its "brother" Diatone P-610. However, it's not inferior to it. They both were designed for the same applications, so they are really very similar.
This speaker was rather cheap and you can see it from its chassis. But one must not judge by appearance: Pioneer well knew how to spend money and they spent them for the right things.
The nominal diameter is 16 cm, the magnet is in Alnico, while the nominal power is 3W (max power 20W). It has a well done exponential paper cone, the moving mass is 7gr. and in the gap there are 11000 Gauss! Sensibility is 92 dB/1W/1m while frequency response is up to 16 KHz. The central "eye" is very similar to the one used in Altec speakers...
The free air frequency response is very linear, even if it may appear not perfect. In fact, when an enclosurer is used, the response becomes more linear: it was designed for the RIGHT sound.
The PE-16M is a top quality full-range speaker. Balance is its best characteristic. It has music, it has the RIGHT sound. The other famous full-range speakers are quite different: they usually have no balance, they are great in specific aspects but poor in others. PE-16M is not absolute in some aspects. If used in the right way, you will listen to the only important thing: music.
